OPEN LETTER TO WENGER + MATCH PREVIEW

Dear Arsene,

I’m your big fan here in Nigeria, albeit to the dismay of most of my friends. They are all tired of you. Some of them wish death upon you. Your reputation is at an all-time low. You really are not getting any love here, which is very surprising.

I keep wondering why they feel that way. Why they think you are hell-bent on destroying a club that attained its status as one of the best in the world, thanks to your magic.

Firstly, the way they keep clamoring for new signings, like spoilt kids. Spoilt kids that would rather have a new toy bought for them than change the dead batteries in their toy. In occassions when United, even Barcelona have had positional crisis, like we’re having with our Full Backs, did they sign new players to fill the positions during the crisis? No they didn’t. They made use of other players in  the squad. Barca played Busquets and Mascherano as centre backs. United played Carrick and Fletcher as centre backs. I wonder how they expect you to make Full back signings when you have 4 injured full backs. What happens to the signings when the injured players return.

They expect you to sign Hazard and Goetze. Unrealistic and confused bunch of fans I think they are. They want experience in the squad, a squad that has Wilshere, Ramsey, Coquelin, Frimpong, yet they want you to complement these young barely experienced players with young, barely experienced, albeit highly rated players.

They complain about Chamakh, understandably so, but players go through bad patches, and the onus lies on the manager to help them recover from such patches by bedding such players into games, trying to build the players confidence. We all saw Chamakh when he was our only striker. No one thought he was a bad signing then. Torres is going through a similar patch in Chelsea. Have they also suggested to Chelsea to offload him to the first bidder?

They want Diaby sold. The same way they wanted Van Persie sold. The same way Barca fans would have wanted Iniesta sold when he was always getting injured. Sabali

In the case of Park. What they don’t realize is that they do not see what you see in training. They speak as if you would purposely keep benching a goal scoring machine. I am convinced that if Park were to be as good as you thought he was when you hijacked his move to Lille, he’d be starting our games and sharing the goal scoring responsibilities with Van Persie. But he’s either a very lazy player, or you have other plans for him, in the latter stages of the season perhaps.

They also complain about your refusal to rest Aaron Ramsey. I understand you however. Ramsey just got back fully into the game, after his horrific injury and he needs to build his stamina. They seem to forget that Frank Lampard played 164 consecutive games for Chelsea. Is Lampard not human? Is Ramsey complaining? There are many players in the game that play week in, week out. Why do they single out Ramsey as the player that desperately needs rest? He is still a young player, and whatever his body is trained to do now is what the body will get used to. I see Ramsey becoming an important Arsenal player. Lampard-like. Play all 38 games kinda player.

They complain about your tactics. I feel this is very insulting. You are one of the best managers in the world, some random unknown Football Manager player thinks he should explain tactics to you. I’m too angry to dwell on this particular point.

Other issues like Chamberlain’s substitution against United would come up. But i think you have handled that one expertly in your post match press conference.

This letter is just to let you know that there are some of us football fans that still maintain our sanity. We understand that football teams go through phases. All great teams have gone through similar phases where no matter what the manager does, no matter who he signs things just don’t seem to be getting better. But I am certain that under your watch, we would get back to winning ways and start lifting trophies again.

Keep doing your good work Prof. Some of us still appreciate you. And we know all the whiny fans would keep shut soon. All the best against  Blackburn tomorrow.

Yours

Debo

ARSENAL versus BLACKBURN

This would be short.

We need to start our season afresh for the umpteenth this season. Crazy games coming up after this game. Martin O’Neil’s Sunderland, AC Milan, Sp*rs, Liverpool, Newcastle… all coming up. Just like we built momentum after the 8-2 game. Lets do this again.

I suspect some players would be rested. I hope the lads that come in put in a performance that’ll stake a claim for a more important role for them in this second part of our season.

We didn’t sign any  new players. We have to make do with who we have. These players need to repay the manager’s confidence in them, and cut the poor old man some slack.

Come On You Gooners!!!!!

  1. Thanks for writing this. It is exactly how I feel. Keep the faith!

  2. What a load of drivel. Head in the clouds rubbish – how long you wanna wait ? another 7 years when each season it is getting worse ? Blind faith is the worst kind of faith

  3. good writeup here Debo, your comment and advice are excellent. I pray we Gunners fans know the reasons why we should support our club, the manager comes rain, and sunshine. Debo, you have shows good example of a die hard fan of our branded football club, may God answers all our prayers. We shall win back our pride. please, accept my appericiation and over look all d error, thank you my brother.

  4. Hi gud comment bt no excuse bcos mr wenger z doing same mistake has technical broblem wid subs y only resocky alex chambelin 4 change while ramsay n deo r tired luk at park no chanse given y do u steal his deal.

  5. Good write-up debo…I used to share ds same view (well partially I still do), wenger knows best, we r just going thru rough times, next year is our year, e.t.c…but things r not getting better, d only gud thg ds season is seeing rvp netting all those goals and staying fit. And d problem is d club admin r ok with d status quo, winning trophies is not a priority 4 ’em, they jst wna stay “top 4”..i see wenger sad eyes every time we lose games, I know his passion stays strong and I know he’s d best we’d ever have but we r thirsty 4 d old arsenal! Even wvout d trophy atleast let’s finish strong!

    • If I’m getting you… So even if we change Manager… the “club admin” as you put it would still be satisfied with “top 4” abi? Or would the new manager do something Wenger isn’t doing? Like give the Board an ultimatum?

  6. Good stuff man, you beat me to this 😐
I agree with almost everything you said, I don’t think Wenger deserves the plethora of vitriol that is being hurled at him, he at least deserves our support at present, based on what he has done for the club – which is, if you ask me, QUITE A LOT.
Now, I’m not saying Wenger is perfect, he makes mistakes like every other human. He could be annoyingly stubborn and that is perhaps one of his strengths, and it has become somewhat of a weakness of recent.
The major thing I disagree with you on right now is his refusal to give Ramsey a break, Rosicky should have started against Bolton considering his performance against Villa and Man Utd, but NO, Wenger stuck with the obviously knackered Ramsey.
I believe Ramsey will be a GREAT player for Arsenal but for someone who just came back from a career threatening injury, he’s being overplayed and it shows in his recent performances. He needs to be given a game off to chill and see from outside, apart from getting the very important rest, I mean see what overplaying Wilshere did to him for the season.
Bottomline of my mini-rant: I DON’T WANT TO SEE RAMSEY START TOMORROW. My preferred line-up: Szczesny, Sagna, Metersacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Coquelin, Arteta, Rosicky, Theo, Park, Arshavin.

It will be a bold move to keep RvP on the bench but maybe that will ginger the other players to actually SCORE.

  7. I can’t fault the organisation of your post, but I have problems with ur ideas. Quite fine, Arsene has done lots for the club, but that’s not a platform for us to watch him run it to the ground, I don’t clamour for a change in Coach really, but I want a massive twist of ideas, just show little ambition. You cited the example of United and Barca, point is they can pull from their reserves, we don’t have that luxury. I respect u a lot Dhebbur, but here is where we get to disagree. Nice one though

    • Hehehee.. disagreeing is a good thing. We agree to disagree… Bitter Truth is, it’s easier to sack Wenger than change his ideology… Cos, we all know how stubborn he is. He feels the squad he puts out every week can compete with the best out there.. you might “smh” for me for what I’m about to say, but I think we’ve just been very unlucky… I swear.. na unluck dey make all those injuries come… or something else, not the manager’s lack of ambition sha..

  8. u r a very deluded gunner. Same rubbish keep occuring every season and u think change is not needed. U can like to eat shit with wenger…..dnt even get me started….

  9. I can’t lie,I feel all sorts of guilty reading this post because I fall into categories of people you mentioned there but you can’t blame me. A sailor in a ship going awry would complain for his safety. A pirate might even plan a mutiny if the Captain isn’t taking them anywhere fruitful. My point, we all see things are going south and we still have faith in Arsene, but his stubbornness reduced the strands of hair I have left whenever I see our club play. I can’t but agree with Hexy here. Ramsey is known to dillydally with balls nowadays, why not give Rosicky*he’s being playing industrious soccer of late* or even Benayoun. Ramsey is the future that we know but he’s making all sorts of mistakes I feel Wenger should be making known to him after every game. Park on the other hand should have been given run outs needless of his performance on the training pitch, in my opinion game time breeds match confidence and match confidence breeds goals. Same with Chamakh. We’ve gotten used to Gerv-VP-Walcott. Both of whom we know have bad games. Our major problem has been our predictability and Wenger hasn’t worked on that. Why not try 4-4-2? Opponents would obviously be busy trying to occupy VP, the other striker has a chance to prove himself. Good post all the same. Victoria Concordia Crescit.

  10. Dhebbur, I’ve reached a certain degree of close friendship with you so I won’t “lash out” but I’ll have to express my disappoinmtment in some of the words you used in this post.

For starters, this post clearly indicates that you’re an AKB to the bone but I’m sorry to say, you’ve had your head so far up Wenger’s arse that you haven’t seen the light of day in years.

Everyone appreciates Wenger for what he has done for the club but he’s letting his ego take the better of him and it’s affecting everyone involved at Arsenal.

    On your quotes,

Barca used Mascherano and Sergi Busquets while Man Utd used Carrick and Fletcher as CBs. When Arsenal tried using Song as a CB, didn’t you see how the midfield crumbled. It’s pointless to compare Arsenal with the likes of Barca quality-wise and Wenger had to make do with what he had…which wasn’t good enough.

“They expect you to sign Hazard and Goetze. Unrealistic and confused bunch of fans I think they are.”

If Wenger signed Hazard this January, an AKB like you used have gone haywire praising him for such a feat. Just because he failed to achieve such, we the fans that want the best for our team are “unrealistic and confused”

Why on Earth did you compare Aaron Ramsey with Frank Lampard. I’m not gonna point any finger at the Welshman but he’s in dire need of rest. His fatigue on the pitch is telling and his performances have been below-par.

Finally, “They complain about your tactics. I feel this is very insulting. You are one of the best managers in the world, some random unknown Football Manager player thinks he should explain tactics to you”

In the 2007/08 campaign, we almost won the league with 4-4-2. Wenger adopted this new formation to bring out the best in Fabregas but Arsenal has clearly struggled without a dominant creative midfielder.

Every Arsenal writer/fan loves Arsenal but the clock is ticking on Wenger.

I just hope you learn from this. You’re a great writer but criticism goes hand-in-hand with praise.

    Sayonara.

    • ENIGMA BABA!!! You just destroyed me with lyrical koboko. I’m wailing in real life.. I would have to get back to you on this one. 😥

    • Ok.. I think i’ve recovered a bit.. Baba Wenger no holy pass o.. I just didnt feel the need to go into his negative sides. seeing that we have too many of that flying around already.. you get me? 😐

AKB though? LOOOL!!!! Head in Wenger’s arse too? 😥

      • LOOOOL! Lyrical koboko indeed.
Let’s be realistic, Wenger won’t leave till he feels his time is up. Who will sack him? The board/owner he’s making money for? I still think he’s the man for the job given the resources he works with.

Debo, how is your head doing up the Frenchman’s arse? I kid I kid…

  11. The above write-up may av been appropriate abt 5years ago, bt now, it’s a bad joke that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
7 trophy-less seasons! Thats at least 28 major trophies that wenger has missed out on. Since the last time arsenal won anything of note, manutd av won 3league titles plus a champs leag, Chelsea av won 3 league titles plus how many fa cups? Barca has won 3 champions league titles!!!
Granted one was a tight final against arsenal but u get the idea.

Speaking of tight, what happened to that arsenal that gave manutd a run for their money? That won the league at old trafford? At old trafford?!!!
Fast forward to today and you av Ivan gazidis claiming (after that 8-2 drubbing at, oh, old trafford) that arsenal can cope without UCL, oh joy! That’s just ambition and inspiration all mixed together…no?

I can’t even call for a honorable resignation from wenger anymore, he seems bent on making his final days in arsenal as horrible for himself and the fans as much as possible, I wonder what the fans av done to deserve such a pitiable board. They are only concerned about profits and turnovers. Plus how did nasri contract run and run till it left arsenal in a dilemma?
Avnt u ever wondered y even when on the newspapers wenger’s position seems to be threatened arsenal are never linked with successful, serious managers? Instead of pep, guus, rikjaard, ancelotti u get coyle, o’neil, moyes, am waiting for steve Bruce! Not even Mourinho! Granted I don’t want his poisonous personality and negativity but u catch my drift?

The board is bent on this profit-making at all costs, not unlike a Mourinho with trophies or Barca in sight.
Meaning, unless we r kidding ourselves, my critical insight is useless, wenger isnt under pressure from the board and this article of obsequious support for wenger is unnecessary; he doesn’t need it.
You got a coach who wud rather put kids on the field and pay £15m for potential than £20m for world class talent and a board who (well u know) lacks football sense and it’s a perfect marriage!

Arsenal has been nothing if not a laughing stock for many years now. I still remember posting that nothing for arsenal this season due to wenger’s stubborn and shallow-minded horror of a transfer policy, but hexy-dre disagreed with me. I don’t deserve any plaudits for that insight, the candid arsenal fan knows already that that accident against ac Milan was waiting to happen. Wait for a minute, did u actually think wenger wud av bought per, arteta, and Santos if we were not drubbed 8-2 by united? Food for thought.

Arsenal is not yet rotten, but it’s rotting. Oh! That bittersweet smell of fermentation before the repugnant, causing bile vomiting stench of putrefaction! Aren’t u just waiting for it? It gets tiring watching the annual implosion event of arsenal in Jan or feb. The only thing that is not in the script is how we can outdo our capitulation.
None seems better than the horror show master-minded by none other than the puppet master wenger himself in the infamous “10 days” of losing out on EPL, UCL, and FA cup in one week. And in the same vain (pun intended) the players had a meeting and produced the award winning ludicrous, ridiculous, hapless and hopeless show of losing that carling cup final last year. Oh! Who says being an Arsenal fan doesn’t have it’s props?! I’m definitely taking this show on the road! And I ain’t going nowhere fellas! Why? Oh, I’m not a masochistic, but this my beloved club has clubbed me with disappointments for so long I’v gotten a lil bit immune. I watched the disjointed display against Ac Milan without my pulse racing, just waiting for the next goals by Milan and they didnt disappoint…hmm, that word. I bet you djorou wud av scored an own goal just to make a point if Milan refused to score more!

Now lemme puncture a few holes in the wengers-apologists-balloon. This coach must av an award for horrible transfers (or lack of). There was a time David villa was available for ard £15m, the guy was literally begging to come to arsenal, he refused to sign him. He got rosicky instead of ribery and we all know how that worked out. He even let both flamini and diarra go, back to back. That ain’t enuff, he is so much blind to the shortcomings of his mediocre players to a fault. Let’s face it, fabianski, chamakh, diaby, Gibbs, Walcott, arshavin, frimpong, squillaci, djorou will never be great players, anywhere no! Let alone in arsenal. Why? These players are not just good enough.
And for long would he keep sacrificing games on the altar of potential? Senderous, vela, even Song had all cost us crucial games before wenger realized they were white elephant projects or in Song’s case, they took the initiative to become better players. End result? Trophy-less seasons.
Fabregas was blooded with pires, Gilberto, flamini, vieira, edu in midfield. Yet the same coach thinks frimpong wud be a star, playing with Ramsey, Walcott, arshavin? You judge.
